Adaptation

The ability of the human eye to adapt to different lights in the field of vision is called adaptation. It is the process in which the eye quickly gets used to new light situations by increasing or decreasing the size of the pupil. When the ambient brightness varies greatly, changes in sensitivity on theretinal receptors cause a change between cone vision and rod vision and the eye thereby adapts to the new luminance. The adaptation process and the associated adaptation time are determined by the start and end of the change in brightness as well as the individual visual performance.
